Read Your Meter

When we can't read your meter for some reason, you will receive an estimated bill. Our estimate is based on your previous gas usage and the average temperature since your meter was read last.

When you get an estimated bill, you can read your own meter to verify monthly usage. Or, if we can't gain access to your meter on your scheduled date, and you don't want an estimated bill, you can read your own meter. Then, call us with the reading by the scheduled reading date shown on your bill.

Here's How to Read Your Meter

Your gas meter has a series of dials numbered from 0 to 9. To read the gas meter, just follow the following simple steps:

  1. Dials are read and written down from right to left. The resulting number is read left to right.
  2. For all dials, if the pointer is between two numbers, write the lower of the two numbers, except if the pointer is between 9 and 0, write down the 9.
  3. For dials 2, 3, and 4 (counting from right to left), if the pointer on the dial being read is on a number and the dial to the right is between 0 and 2, write down the number the pointer is pointing to on the dial being read. If the dial to the right is between 8 and 0, write down the next lower number of the dial being read.

Protect Our Meter Readers

Even friendly pets can become aggressive when protecting their homes from unfamiliar people such as meter readers. To avoid potential problems, please let PPL know if you own a dog so that we may alert our meter readers to the dog's presence on your property. Also, please check your bill for the date of the next meter reading and keep your dog inside or restrained on that date to ensure the safety of our employees. We thank you, and our meter readers thank you!
